JOHN THE MAN SENT BY GOD

DIGGING DEEP NO. 1142

JOHN: THE MAN SENT BY GOD
Main Text: John 1:6-8
Key Verse: John 1:6 – "There came a man, having been sent from God, whose name was John."

This simple verse introduces one of the greatest servants of God in Scripture—John the Baptist. Though only one sentence, it reveals profound truths about God's calling, purpose, ministry, and the qualities of a faithful servant.

John 1:6–8
"There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the Light, that all might believe through him. He was not the Light but came to bear witness about the Light."

Introduction

Among all the people introduced in the New Testament, John the Baptist stands out because he is described in a unique way: "a man sent from God." This title reveals the source of his authority, the purpose of his life, and the focus of his ministry. John's greatness was not found in his position or popularity but in his obedience to God's calling and his unwavering commitment to point others to Jesus Christ.

His life teaches every believer that God still calls, prepares, and sends people to accomplish His purposes.

Main Objectives

By the end of this study, believers should understand:

  • God is still calling and sending people today.
  • Every servant of God has a divine assignment.
  • God values faithfulness more than popularity.
  • Our identity comes from God's calling rather than public recognition.
  • Every believer has been sent into the world with purpose.

John begins his Gospel by introducing Jesus as the eternal Word (John 1:1-5). Immediately afterward, John introduces someone else, not the Messiah, but His messenger. Before God revealed the Light, He first sent a witness to announce the Light.

This demonstrates one of God's principles: God prepares people before He performs His work.

God's Pattern of Sending Messengers Before Major Acts
  • Noah before the Flood
  • Moses before the Exodus
  • Samuel before Israel's kings
  • Elijah before revival
  • John before Christ
  • The apostles before the spread of the Gospel

I. "There Came a Man..."

This emphasizes John's humanity. John was not an angel, not a celebrity, not a supernatural being—simply a man. James 5:17 says Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.

God delights in using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. God is not looking for perfect people; He is looking for available people. God's greatest works have often been accomplished through ordinary men and women who surrendered themselves completely—examples include Moses, Gideon, David, Peter, and Paul.

II. "...Sent From God..."

This is the heart of the verse. John did not appoint himself. He was sent. There is a significant difference between going and being sent. Many people go. Only those whom God commissions are truly sent.

Jesus repeatedly emphasized that He Himself had been sent by the Father (John 5:36; John 6:38). Likewise, John received his authority from God rather than from human institutions.

Characteristics of a God-Sent Person

A God-sent servant: receives a divine calling, carries God's authority, speaks God's message, depends on God's power, and seeks God's glory.

III. Being Sent Requires Three Things

A. A Divine Call

Jeremiah 1:5 – "Before I formed you... I appointed you."

Isaiah 6:8 – "Whom shall I send?"

Romans 10:15 – "How shall they preach unless they are sent?"

God always initiates true ministry.

B. Divine Preparation

John spent years in the wilderness. God prepares privately before revealing publicly. The wilderness developed character, humility, dependence, and spiritual authority.

C. Divine Commission

John had a clear assignment: prepare the way for Jesus. Every God-given assignment is specific.

IV. "...Whose Name Was John."

Names in Scripture often reveal purpose. John means "The Lord is gracious." Even before John preached, his very name proclaimed God's grace. His ministry would introduce people to the Lamb of God.

Notice what John is not called. He is not introduced as a prophet, a preacher, or a miracle worker—simply "a man sent from God." God values obedience above titles.

V. John's Mission

John 1:7
"He came as a witness."

His purpose was not to be famous, not to build his own ministry, not to gain followers—but to point everyone to Christ.

VI. Characteristics of John the Baptist

1. He Was Humble

John 3:30 – "He must increase, but I must decrease." True servants elevate Christ rather than themselves.

2. He Was Courageous

He confronted soldiers, tax collectors, religious leaders, and King Herod. God's servants speak truth regardless of the cost.

3. He Was Spirit-Filled

Luke 1:15 – He was filled with the Holy Spirit from before birth. Powerful ministry flows from the Spirit, not merely from giftedness.

4. He Was Focused

He never lost sight of his assignment. He refused distractions.

5. He Was Faithful

Jesus declared that no greater prophet had arisen than John (Matthew 11:11). Greatness in God's kingdom is measured by faithfulness.

VII. Lessons About God's Calling

God Chooses People. God's kingdom advances through people. God could use angels. Instead, He chooses human beings.

God Sends Before He Blesses. Before Jesus ministered publicly, God sent John. Before revival, God sends voices. Before restoration, God sends prophets. Before salvation, someone shares the Gospel.

Every Believer Is Sent.

John 20:21
"As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

Every Christian has a mission field. It may be in the family, workplace, school, neighborhood, or nation.

Warnings from This Verse

  • Do Not Send Yourself. Self-appointed ministry often produces frustration. Seek God's timing.
  • Do Not Seek Recognition. John never sought fame. He pointed everyone to Christ.
  • Do Not Compare Assignments. John was not Jesus. His assignment was different. Every believer has a unique calling.

Conclusion

John the Baptist's life demonstrates that God delights in using ordinary people who are fully surrendered to Him. He was a man with a divine calling, a prepared heart, a courageous spirit, and a singular purpose: to make Christ known.

His life challenges every believer to ask: Am I living for my own recognition, or am I faithfully fulfilling the assignment God has given me?

Like John, may we become men and women sent by God—humble, Spirit-filled witnesses whose lives direct others to Jesus Christ, the Light of the world.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of John the Baptist, a man sent by You to prepare the way for Jesus. Help us to embrace the calling You have placed on our lives, however small or hidden it may seem. Teach us humility, courage, and faithfulness. May we decrease so that Christ may increase in us, and may our lives point others to the Light of the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
