Character Study — The Ten Virgins
CLOSE ENOUGH TO MISS IT
Main Text: Matthew 25:1–13
Introduction
One of the most sobering realities in Scripture is that it is possible to be close to spiritual things and still miss God's purpose.
In the Parable of the Ten Virgins:
- All ten were invited
- All ten knew the bridegroom
- All ten had lamps
- All ten waited
Yet only five entered.
The frightening reality is that from the outside, they all looked the same.
Discussion
1. Why Were All Ten Virgins Invited?
Scriptures
- Matthew 25:1–4
- Matthew 22:14
- Revelation 22:17
Discussion
- The invitation was not the issue; all ten virgins received it.
- The difference was how they responded to that invitation.
- God's call is extended broadly, but readiness determines who enters when the Bridegroom comes.
Questions
- What does the invitation represent in the Christian life?
- If all ten were invited, what ultimately separated the wise from the foolish?
- Is responding to God's invitation a one-time event, or does it require ongoing faithfulness?
2. What Made the Wise Virgins Different?
Scriptures
- Matthew 25:4
- Proverbs 21:5
Discussion
- What practical steps did the wise virgins take?
- Why is preparation often overlooked?
3. Can Church Activity Be Mistaken for Spiritual Growth?
Scriptures
- Matthew 7:21–23
- 2 Timothy 3:5
Discussion
- Is there a difference between religion and relationship?
- How can believers avoid spiritual complacency?
Key Teaching Points
- Invitation does not equal preparation.
- Being around God's people is not the same as knowing God.
- Spiritual readiness requires intentionality.
- God desires relationship, not merely association.
Conclusion
The wise virgins were not wiser because they knew more.
They were wiser because they prepared differently.
Closing Prayer
Father, help us move beyond familiarity with spiritual things. Give us a genuine desire to know You personally and prepare ourselves for Your purpose. In Jesus' name, Amen.
