Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:3

DIGGING DEEP NO. 936 – May 24 2022
CHARACTER STUDY – You
BANKRUPTCY: Jesus our only plan!

Col 2:14-17

In our world today, there is a stronger emphasis on what we have than on what we are. The world says, “Blessed are those with wealth, strength, power, knowledge, and popularity.” But in his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus puts an emphasis not primarily on what a man has, but on what a man is. The first of these character qualities is a poorness of spirit.

Matthew 5:3 reveals how bankruptcy/poverty can become a blessing. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” In this passage, Jesus is not talking about financial poverty. Rather, He is identifying the spiritual poverty(ism) of a man.

In the spiritual realm, we are absolutetotal bankrupt—beggars before God. We must discover this truth, and admit it; if we don’t see it or refuse to acknowledge it, we will never receive the kingdom of heaven.

Bankruptcy: the state of being completely lacking in a particular quality or value.

Bankrupt: (of a person or organization) declared in law unable to pay outstanding debts.

Quality and value aren’t what we readily have as a human, due to our sinful nature which has lowered our value and worth, hence giving the devil everything he needs to persecute and charge us but thanks to God for Christ, his blood says No.

14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Discussion

Q1. In relation to the banking sector, someone declared as behind in payment is referred to as a debtor, and a collection agency comes into the picture. Who acts as the collection agency concerning our souls/when we are behind? What actions do we engage in as Christians that set us behind? 1 Peter 5:8, Job 2:2.

Q2. Law of Sin vs Grace: It is the law that when you borrow from someone you pay back, most of the time with interest, but then the bankruptcy loophole is in effect as well to cater for situations when you have nothing to pay. Sin says tribulations and ultimately death, Jesus says grace and life. Col 2:15-16. Compare the world’s bankruptcy plan to the coverage we have in Jesus. Col 2:8-15.

Q3. Lawyers, Collection agencies, and borrowers benefit all the way from you filing bankruptcy, they claim it’s for your own good even though all losses are written off (borrowers), lawyers would charge you, and all in all, you end up with a terrible credit report for the next 7 years… but Christ’s protection plan says otherwise. Devil capitalize on your mistake, Christ redeems. 2 Cor 5:17, Zec 3:3-4, Zec 3:1-2.

Q4. Compare the reaction when you hear a celebrity just filed for bankruptcy to when a sinner just repented. Luke 15:7, 15:10

We all are living on borrowed time, how well we utilize it determines which kind of plan is offered to us, notice the title said our “only”. Josh 24:14-15

CONCLUSION

This discovery comes when we see just who God is, and then we understand who we are; Brokenness follows this discovery; we realize we cannot depend on the things we once believed we could. We cannot depend on our pedigrees, our education, or knowledge; these things cannot help us.

Those who are spiritually bankrupt cannot afford to be proud. All we can do is declare our dire condition. Because, as Matthew 5:3 reveals, spiritual beggars are blessed…“for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
